About the M.F.A Degree

Since, the public is not familiar with the M.F.A. degree, an explanation is necessary. M.F.A. stands for Master of Fine Arts. This is not an “easy” degree to obtain, just because it is in the arts rather than in engineering, science, or law. The M.F.A. is a highly selective and competitive graduate program, especially in top ranking schools.

In 2008, the Harvard Business School said that the M.F.A. : Master of Fine Arts is the new M.B.A (listen to the podcast). The M.F.A is the highest degree in the practice of art. It is a specialized degree for becoming a professor at a college or university. Nalyne Lunati, the owner/art director holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from San José State University, a three year M.F.A. program.

Lunati's emphasis is in pictorial arts which refers to two dimensional arts. The fine arts program at San José State University is in the same tier as the Stanford program. SJSU is the oldest art program in California. There are different categories in the fine arts department, such as painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry making, and ceramics. Prestigious art programs, like SJSU, tend to accept anywhere from one to three candidates per category from a pool of 500 applicants.
